It is f i t t ing in this b icentennial year of the United States, for the ed i f i ca t ion of oncologists, to cast a glance at what physicians o f the American Revolut ion though t and practiced about cancer . There is no better source of such en l igh tenment than the wri t ings o f Benjamin Rush (1745-1813) of Phi ladelphia. Of English Quaker stock, born in Pennsylvania and educated at Pr inceton and Edinburgh, he was a s igner of the Declaration of Independence, Professor of Medic ine at the University o f Pennsylvania, and Treasurer of the United States Mint. He also was a stormy petrel who quarrel led with George Washington and who pract iced cop ious b loodletting and purgat ion for yel low fever. A sel f -conf ident theorist, he nevertheless was an able, shrewd cl in ic ian. The letters of Benjamin Rush were col lected and edi ted in 1951 by L. H. Butterf ield (1). Of over 650 selected letters wr i t ten from 1761 to 1813, four are consul ta t ions regard i ng c a n c e r . ' The under ly ing theme of all four letters is to discla im a cancer paste in t roduced by one of his students, Dr. Hugh Martin, w h o purpor ted that it was an Indian vegetable remedy. Rush (2) found that the preparat ion contained arsen i c.
